Manager Manufacturing Purification – D Shift (Nights)
What you will do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role, you will champion a safe and compliant production environment through structured on-the-floor presence. You will lead the Purification manufacturing team in the execution of downstream processing operations, supporting reliable, right-first-time production while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety, product quality, and compliance. This role will also be well positioned to champion problem solving and continuous improvement among the team and in collaboration with cross-functional partners in Quality, EHSS, F&E, and Process Development. The manager will be an active player in our OnePlant operating model, building reliability, agility, and efficiency through our I-530 pathway and Agile Workforce.
The Front-Line Manager will collaborate routinely with Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Engineering, Facilities and Engineering, Maintenance, Process Development, Process Engineering, Supply Chain, Regulatory Compliance, and other site functions. This role requires strong technical ownership of purification manufacturing operations, disciplined execution of cGMP and safety expectations, and the ability to make timely decisions in a dynamic production environment.
With minimal direction, the Manager is responsible for leading on-the-floor operations and staff in manufacturing. The Manager will supervise, coach, hire, onboard, and develop manufacturing staff while ensuring that team members are trained, capable, engaged, and prepared to meet production requirements. The Front-Line Manager will help define area objectives, identify improvement opportunities, lead change efforts, and deliver against short- and long-term AR5 manufacturing goals. This leader will be expected to strengthen reliability, improve operational efficiency, enable agility for future business needs, and support AR5’s commitment to being the best place for talent.
The onboarding phase for this role will last 2–6 weeks. During this time, successful incumbents will work an administrative schedule of Monday through Friday, approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Following onboarding, the successful incumbent will join the D shift team working a 12-hour night shift, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on a two-week rotation covering seven days per week. The rotating shift offers several benefits, including an average of 14 days on shift per month, every other weekend off, and a 15% shift differential.
Scope of Responsibilities
Safety and Quality Oversight The cornerstone of our operations is safe and compliant execution by the manufacturing team. Own and reinforce a strong safety and quality culture within the shift and ensure standards are upheld through active engagement and coaching. Ensure purification activities are performed in accordance with approved procedures, batch records, and cGMP requirements.
Operational Leadership Lead the shift and collaborate with peer managers to reliably deliver production targets. Coordinate daily task allocation and plan ahead with the scheduling team for short- to mid-term schedule needs. Provide Purposeful Presence on the Floor (Gemba) to monitor overall department performance, provide coaching, and ensure consistency with our core Floor Operating Principles. Oversee execution of purification operations, which may include chromatography, filtration, concentration, and buffer exchange activities, in accordance with site procedures and process requirements. Coordinate with support functions to troubleshoot, identify, and resolve issues as needed while on shift.
Talent Development Mentor and develop talent, fostering an environment of engagement, belonging, continuous learning, and operational excellence. Build a high-performing team, ensuring accountability and advancing technical and leadership capabilities in purification manufacturing.
Continuous Improvement, Innovation, and Process Enhancement Identify and drive process improvement initiatives to support higher efficiency and eliminate non-value-added activities. Use operational data and team input to improve purification process execution, right-first-time performance, equipment reliability, and deviation prevention.
Agile Workforce Leadership Role model ARI Manufacturing’s Agile Workforce behaviors by planning and executing cross-training and dynamic resource allocation across AR5 and AR30 that enhances responsiveness and productivity while increasing opportunities for staff development.
Leading Strategy Development and Execution
Assist in developing and implementing departmental strategy and plans aligned with broader AR5, ARI, and site manufacturing objectives. Translate strategic priorities into clear daily, weekly, and shift-level execution plans for purification operations. Anticipate operational, quality, safety, training, equipment, and schedule risks and build contingencies to reduce impact. Deliver strong business results through continuous improvement, standardization, and disciplined execution. Use metrics, audit outcomes, process data, and staff feedback to identify trends and improve performance. Lead change efforts that improve safety, compliance, quality, efficiency, throughput, and reliability. Ensure the team understands how daily execution connects to Amgen’s mission, patient impact, and AR5 business priorities.
Building a Strong Organizational Alignment
Be responsible for selection, onboarding, training, evaluation, staff relations, performance management, and development of manufacturing staff. Ensure the right people, skills, and resources are in place and optimally allocated to achieve production, quality, and business goals. Interact with management to optimize organizational structure, roles, responsibilities, and shift performance. Build and develop a diverse, impactful team that can reliably execute complex purification manufacturing operations. Work across functions to build organizational and individual capability. Develop strong relationships with staff members and provide open, clear, and actionable feedback. Foster a team environment that supports accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, learning, knowledge-sharing, and psychological safety.
